A comprehensive approach to assessment in the elderly patient should be adopted because functional and physiological impairments are often complex and interrelated. It is important for nurses to be knowledgeable about medical, functional and psychosocial issues that affect older adults with mental disorders. The comprehensive assessment should be used in the identification of patients at risk for common mental disorders and geriatric syndromes.

The biopsychosocial model provides an integrated approach to understanding the normal aging process. It assumes that there is interplay between biological, psychological and social factors that influence late life development, health, function and quality of life. Nurses caring for older adults must be aware of these aspects as they act to facilitate healthy aging.

A common challenge in assessing geriatric problems is distinguishing symptoms signifying medical conditions from psychiatric problems. Atypical presentations occur both in medical illness that is often first manifest by psychiatric symptoms, or in psychiatric illness whose symptoms may differ from presentation in earlier adulthood. This product provides information about symptoms indicative of an atypical presentation of common mental disorders such as depression or cognitive impairment in the older adult.
