Abstract:
This comprehensive teaching casebook provides guidance on incorporating gerontological competencies into required generalist courses focusing on social justice and practice with organizations and communities. The case study centers on a social work intern in a regional hospital who has been called in to the emergency room by a nurse supervisor to talk with an 80-year-old widow. Included in the casebook are gerontological competencies that fit into the required generalist practice course, the case and where it fits in the curriculum, suggestions for how the case can be used, additional learning activities, background reading for faculty, and much more.
Educational objectives:
Upon completion of the case, students will have learned the following competencies:
- Recognize and identify family, agency, community, and society factors that promote or inhibit the greatest possible independence of the older adult.
- Collaborate with other health, mental health and allied health professionals in delivering services to older adults.
- Assess organization and community effectiveness in meeting needs of older adults and their caregivers.
- Recognize indicators of the need for more in-depth assessment of areas of concern
