Infusing Geropsychiatric Nursing into Curricula - Resources for Teaching Key Concept III.A. (Approach to Older Adults: Age-Related Adaptations)
Clinicians caring for patients with mental health issues must be aware of the impact of aging and age-and-disease related changes on mental illness and its expression. Interventions will need to be tailored or adapted to respond the changes that commonly occur in late life. An example would be taking into consideration sensory/perceptual function and cognitive status. Other important elements to consider are older adults’ comfort with technology and health literacy. Nurses must educate patients, families and peers about these changes and adaptations for self-care, teaching, and other interventions.
This product contains resources that address the following:
- Advance care planning
- Caregiving
- Cognition
