Abstract:
The Communication Skills CEX focuses on the skills involved in obtaining an initial interview of a geriatric patient for the first year geriatrics fellow. The encounter between a fellow and a preselected geriatric patient is videotaped and reviewed by both the learner and multidisciplinary faculty using an assessment tool.
Educational objectives:
- Recognize the fundamental structures of a geriatrics interview including a complete geriatrics review of systems
- Analyze the fellow’s use of different communication techniques in obtaining a medical and social history (open-ended questions, use of transitional statements)
- Reflect on the fellow’s style of inquiry
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:
Videotaping encourages the fellow to self-reflect on their interview. The faculty review encourages formative feedback as well as an in-depth discussion of the fellow's communication techniques.
