Educational objectives:
  1. Provide a "hands on" experience in medication compliance,
  2. Understand what it is like to be a patient and take multiple medications,
  3. Recognize the difficulty of medication adherence,
  4. Provide insight into the decision making process that goes into developing a rational drug regimen limiting drug interactions, adverse reactions, and improving compliance, and
  5. Learn what kind of information a patient receives when a medication is being filled.
Additional information/Special implementation requirements or guidelines:
You will need to obtain drug information pamphlets for each of the medications that you "prescribe" from your local pharmacy.

You will need 5 different flavors of tic tac (or other similar candy).
For each participant you need:
  • 7 of the flavor that you prescribe "once daily"
  • 14 of the flavor that you prescribe "twice daily"
  • 21 of the flavor that you prescribe "three times daily"
  • 1 of the flavor that you prescribe "once a week"
  • 5 of the "Coumadin" flavor, which is prescribed "one three times a week and 1/2 of one 4 times a week". Tell the learner to either cut the whole ones with a knife or get a pill cutter from any pharmacy.

Comments

We are thinking of trying this with our M2s Pharm course. We are thinking it will do all the educational objectives just at a more basic level. This would be part of a TBL which would give the students an opportunity to discuss compliance issues.  We are wondering about assigning students simulation identities, i.e., 37 year old, woman, triathlete, so that they would have to think about what compliance issues the patient might have. Any ideas on how to make this an effective activity?
