Continuing Mobile Education for EMS Providers is a video vodcast-based education program that includes interviews from physicians, EMTs, paramedics, and patients to help the EMS Provider give patients better care. The program was created to address the need for more "on-demand" educational opportunities for EMS Providers. Each month, a new block of four 10-minute vodcasts is posted to the program website, http://mlrems.org/page.php?55. In the Assessment block of podcasts, you will learn about pearls and caveats for assessing the older adult in the prehospital setting, particularly patients with altered mental status, strokes, and falls.
Episode 1: Evaluating Altered Mental Status
- Participants will identify common causes of altered mental status in the older adult
- Participants will learn the importance of determining the patient's baseline mental status
- Participants will learn interview strategies to assist in evaluating altered mental status
Episode 2: Evaluating Stroke in the Prehospital Setting
- Participants will learn the components of a focused physical exam to evaluate stroke
- Participants will be able to describe key physical findings associated with a stroke
- Participants will discuss what information is important to be relayed from the scene to the receiving facility
Episode 3: The Fallen Older Adult
- Participants will review common injury patterns seen with the older adult after a fall
- Participants will learn some obstacles in evaluating the older adult who has fallen
- Participants will review common causes and consequences of falls in older adults
Episode 4: Pearls of the Older Adult Physical Exam
- Participants will describe common physical findings associated with aging
- Participants will be able to describe some acute physical findings seen in the older adult
