CHAMP (Curriculum for the Hospitalized Aging Medical Patient) DELIRIUM
University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences The Pritzker School of Medicine
The "Delirium" module is part of the CHAMP faculty development program, which aims to improve inpatient, geriatric medical care through a "teach the teacher" approach. It is central to one of the four course themes, preventing hazards of hospitalization. This module addresses risk assessment, prevention strategies, diagnosis using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM), evaluation and management.
Teaching materials for this 2-part session include: a 45-minute slide presentation on risk assessment, prevention and diagnosis; a 45-minute slide presentation on evaluation and management with speaker's notes; bedside teaching triggers; a pocket teaching card; references; a sample session evaluation form; and a CHAMP overview/user's guide. Access to the entire CHAMP course and all teaching resources is granted through the weblink provided.
CHAMP is a multi-tiered educational project with a faculty development program at its core. Hospitalists, general internists, and family practitioners who teach residents and medical students are the targeted audience. The course is organized around four themes in geriatric inpatient care: identifying and assessing vulnerable elders, preventing hazards of hospitalization, improving palliative and end of life care, and managing transitions of care. CHAMP addresses 15 geriatric topics and includes a mini-course entitled, "Teaching on Today's Wards," on advanced clinical teaching skills and teaching across the ACGME Core Competencies in the inpatient setting.
2 (category 1) CME credit hour was awarded to faculty who attended CHAMP "Dementia: Evaluation and Management"
The learner will be able to:
- Appraise the risk of delirium by applying an evidence-based risk stratification scheme.
- Employ site-specific delirium prevention strategies.
- Recognize and diagnose delirium in a hospitalized older adult patient, using the CAM tool.
- Employ a systematic approach to differential diagnosis of delirium (eg, differentiating hypoactive delirium from dementia / depression).
- Employ a systematic approach to the non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment of delirium in the hospitalized older adult.

The materials are good but I assume that the institution has sufficient resources to do it. I would suggest that a faculty member attends a CHAMPS workshop before adopting it.
I wished I had been able to view the video demonstrating the CAM administation
