Performance-Based Assessment of Communication Skills
University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine
A Performance Based Assessment (PBA) tool used to evaluate medical students' ability to prepare and execute an abbreviated life history interview. The students conduct an interview with a senior volunteer. The senior volunteer evaluates the students' communication behavior providing feedback regarding their strengths and areas in need of improvement. Format: Assessment Tool
Goals: To graduate medical students who, when entering the next phase of medical education as residents, are able to provide compassionate and competent care to older people. Objectives: Students should be able to: 1.) conduct an abbreviated life history interview. 2.) present competent communication skills; ask questions in a logical manner in order to elicit meaningful responses. 3.) create a constructive communication environment. The curriculum supports the learning objectives in gerontology and geriatrics that the American Geriatrics Society has developed. These objectives operationalize, with respect to a defined population of older people, the more general competencies UMKC has set for its students. In turn, the UMKC competencies reflect the AAMC's MSOP objectives. The UMKC competencies and the MSOP objectives prompt learning objectives for the gerontology/geriatrics curriculum that the Geriatrics Society omitted: communication skills and responsibility for the health of communities.
Used with 100 1st year students in a combined BA-MD degree program.

I am going to do some minor adaptation/rewording of the eval/scoring sheet and use it to track some ongoing work on improving patient communication with one of my fellows
