Web-GEM Highlight

Web-GEMs (Geriatric Education Modules) is POGOe's series of interactive peer-reviewed case modules based on the AAMC Geriatrics Competencies. Highlighted this month is BPH & Polypharmacy the case of Mr. Thompson.

Mr. Thompson is a 70-year-old man who lives alone and is independent in his basic ADLs and IADLs. He comes to the office today asking for, "something to stop me from going so often." Upon further questioning, it is revealed that he is not able to hold his urine for very long once he has an urge to void and he has to get up 3 to 4 times each night to urinate. Some days he notes he is tired because voiding interferes with his sleep. He wonders if this could be his prostate acting up. Several years ago, during a routine physical, his doctor mentioned that he likely had "BPH."

Here are some of the Educational Objectives of this case:

  • Define benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • List and describe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)
  • Differentiate between LUTS associated with normal and abnormal aging
  • Identify different ways to assess LUTS, including DRE and PVR testing
  • Describe the effects of various drug agents on the lower urinary tract

Assign to your students or challenge yourself.
