Web-GEM Highlight

Web-GEMs (Geriatric Education Modules) is POGOe's series of interactive peer-reviewed case modules based on the AAMC Geriatrics Competencies. Highlighted this month is Elder Abuse, the case of Mrs. James.

You are a third year medical student on a geriatric medicine rotation and, for one half day each week, you accompany a geriatrician, Dr. Ready, and a resident on home visits requested by Adult Protective Services (APS). The Geriatrics team receives a referral from APS to assess an 86-year-old woman named Mrs. James at her home to determine if she is in a state of elder mistreatment or self-neglect, and to determine if she has the capacity to live independently without supervision.

Educational Objectives of this case:

  • Gather patient history from multiple sources in cases of possible elder abuse and mistreatment
  • Recognize signs of elder abuse and mistreatment
  • Assess a person’s capacity to live independently without supervision
  • Describe the role of Adult Protective Services (APS) in cases of possible elder abuse and mistreatment

Assign to your students or challenge yourself.
