New web-GEMs Case This is an unfolding case of Mrs. Jones, a 78-year-old woman with a past medical history of moderate Alzheimer's dementia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, macular degeneration and osteopenia. She is also edentulous. Three days ago, Mrs. Jones was sent to the Emergency Department from a nursing home due to cough and mental status changes. Prior to admission, she required assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming but had been mostly continent of bowel and bladder. Using a rolling walker, she was able to walk short distances with assistance. Mrs. Jones was admitted with a presumptive diagnosis of pneumonia. Excluding her admitting diagnosis, what problems might Mrs. Jones encounter solely as a result of being hospitalized? Assign to your students or challenge yourself.
The purpose of the web-GEMs cases is to develop learners' understanding of geriatric medicine, and to integrate that understanding as they expand their skills within other specialties. Individual cases can be integrated into third year clerkships with emphasis on "core topics", or the curriculum can be used as a whole within a geriatrics, internal medicine, or family medicine clerkship. Visit our web-GEMs page to learn more about the curriculum key features and other cases.
