web-GEMs Special Update

web-GEMs

With the start of the new academic year, it’s the perfect time to integrate web-GEMs into your curriculum.

What are web-GEMs?
web-GEMs are an interactive way to further develop your trainees' understanding of the role of geriatric medicine in your specialty. Web-GEMs are a series of short, peer-reviewed interactive case modules based on the AAMC Geriatrics Competencies that can be easily integrated into trainings in a range of specialties from Neuroscience to Emergency Medicine.

Who can benefit from taking a web-GEM?
web-GEMs can be used for educating individuals in:
• Clerkships
• Residences
• Nursing programs
• Physician Assistant programs
• Fellowships
• Interprofessional team training

How can I use web-GEMs in my teaching?
The web-GEMs cases develop learners’ understanding of geriatric medicine, and integrate that understanding as they expand their skills in other specialties.

In order to utilize web-GEMS most efficiently, you must have an easy to obtain “Confirmed Faculty” status on POGOe.

As a confirmed faculty member, you can create assignments specific to your students needs and receive detailed student reports of cases completed and time spent on each case. Please fill out this brief request form and be sure to include a link to your online institutional bio.

web-GEM Highlights

Atypical Presentation of Urinary Tract Infection (Mrs. Ianucci)
Today is the first day of your outpatient medicine clerkship. Your preceptor is Dr. Sonia Adams, who asks you to see her first patient of the day, Mrs. Ursina Ianucci. Mrs. Ianucci is a functionally independent 83-year-old female who lives in an assisted living facility and is here to establish primary care with you. Dr. Adams asks you to take a thorough history and perform a complete exam.

Dementia (Mrs. Rosenzweig)
Mrs. Hilda Rosenzweig is an 85-year-old woman who presents to your outpatient office for memory complaints. She missed the most recent appointment she had scheduled with you. Today, the patient is accompanied by her husband, Bill.

Medication Management in Elders: Hypoglycemics (Mrs. Green)
You are on your clinical rotation and your team is on-call. The senior resident was called to the Emergency Department to admit Mrs. Green, an 85-year-old widow with Diabetes Mellitus Type II (DM II) who was brought in after being found down. At home, her fingerstick glucose was 45 mg/dL.
